The weekend of 1–2 September 2018 saw the largest ever gathering afloat of yachts designed by Albert Strange; this took place in idyllic conditions on the River Deben in Suffolk, with seven boats taking part. Woodbridge photographer Gill Moon gave chase on behalf of Classic Boat magazine, whose January 2019 issue featured the event. Lodestar Books was represented by Emerald, recently migrated overland from Scotland, fitted out and floated in the nick of time, and crewed with me by Bob Comlay. Gill’s photo shows six of the boats, with us third from left in mid-tack, which explains our untidy-looking foresails. You can find out more of what draws us to the designs, art and writing of Albert Strange by visiting his ‘fan club’ the Albert Strange Association, or by reading Lodestar’s revised edition of the ASA book by John Leather, Albert Strange, Yacht Designer and Artist, which has copious quantities of his designs drawings, art and cruising yarns in addition to a biography and a comprehensive design and boat list.
